Opposes site, not sport

EDITOR:

It was with great interest that I read your most recent article on the community meeting regarding the extension of the special use permit for Nevada Motocross Park.

It is my opinion that this would be very irresponsible (as I stated at the meeting), given the financial impact the county has already suffered, and continues to suffer due to the recent economic downturns. Bearing the debt for such litigation should it occur would I believe, put an unnecessary burden on the taxpayers of Douglas County. Given statements made at past hearings, there seems to be a great probability of such a suit (or suits). The revenue the park has generated ($392,000) is far less than the promised $700,000 to $1 million, and I would submit would not go very far in covering the legal fees the county would surely incur.

I would also like to state that despite what may be perceived as an "anti-motocross" position on my part, this is also untrue. I think that the county could benefit from such a venue. I do feel however that the organizers should pursue this through private means as others have, without the benefits of county subsidies. It seems only reasonable that they should have to purchase their own land and abide by all applicable county ordinances and codes as any other private business would be required to do.

Thank you for allowing me to set the record straight on my position.
