Bird count Sunday

Volunteers who can identify 10-15 bird species are needed for 111th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, 7 a.m. Sunday. The Douglas County bird count is part of a larger survey of North America. Sertoma bingo Jan. 8

Because of New Year's Day, this month's Carson Valley Sertoma Community Bingo is Jan. 8 at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville. Doors open at 11 a.m., early bird at 12:30 p.m., regular session at 1 p.m. Progressive blackout is $250 with 48 numbers or less. Drawing for raffle prizes. Coffee and popcorn provided. Snack bar open. Regular schedule of first Saturday of the month resumes in February. Information, Pat, 265-5332.


Volunteer for senior tax help

Training is available to become an AARP tax aide to do tax preparation for low-income taxpayers, with attention to those age 60 and older. Training is the first week in January. Work will be one day a week in February through April. Information, 267-7998.


Story time returns to library

Toddler and preschool story times at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden return to the castle this week, and continue Tuesdays through March 15. Toddler stories for 18 months to 3 years are 10:30 a.m., with stories for 3 to 4-year-olds at 11:15 a.m. Develop a love of reading with your child at these free library programs. Stories, music, crafts. Seating is limited. Family story time for age 3 and older is 4 p.m. Wednesday and continues weekly through May 25. Information, douglas.lib.nv.us, or 782-9841.


Elks crab feed Jan. 28

Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge 2570 hosts their annual all-you-can-eat crab feed, 5 p.m. Jan. 28, at the CVIC Hall in Minden. Cocktails and social hour at 5 p.m., dinner 6 p.m. On the menu is Dungeness crab, clam chowder, shrimp, salad and garlic bread, or a 1-pound New York steak, (medium or well done only), with baked potato, salad, garlic bread and clam chowder. Monday. Turkey bean burrito, Spanish rice, seasoned zucchini, apricot halves

Tuesday. Meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, pea salad, green beans, banana pudding dessert

Wednesday. Charleston chicken and rice, vegetables, bacon, romaine and Swiss salad, chocolate cream pie

Thursday. Crab cakes, vegetable marinade salad, roasted rosemary potatoes, vegetables, lemon bars

Friday. Roast turkey with gravy, yams and apples, corn on the cob, salad, roll, canned plums
