Parks & rec classes in January

Douglas County Parks & Recreation offers activities and classes for children to seniors. Registration is required for all classes. Information at 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, or 782-9828.

Happy Notes Music: Marching into the New Year. Two- to 5-year-olds tap, explore rhythm, tempo and dynamics in music instruments, songs and activities. Class is 9:15-10 a.m. Tuesdays Jan. 4-25. Cost is $45.

Lil Tumblers. Three- to 5-year-olds learn tumbling, trampoline and conditioning drills, 1-1:45 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 8 - 29. Cost $35.

Beginning Cheers & Dynamics. Youth 6 to 11 learn beginning tumbling drills, cheer motions, jumps and conditioning drills, 4-5 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 3 - 31, or 3-4 p.m. Mondays Jan. 3-31 for age 12-18. Cost $45.

Beginning Tumbling Tricks & Flips. Youth 6-12 learn skills to safely tumble and throw freestyle tricks, 4-5 p.m. Mondays Jan. 3 - 31, or 7-8:15 p.m. Tuesdays Jan. 4-25 for age 16-40. Cost $45.

Lil Ninjas. Youth 4-9 learn martial arts, performing arts, gymnastics, grappling and self-defense, 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays Jan. 4 - 25, or 3:30-4:30 p.m. Fridays Jan. 7 - 28. Cost $49.

Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Classes for age 13 and older, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays January 3-24. Cost $49.

Practical Karate. Age 13 and older learn practical karate and self-defense, 6-7:30 p.m. Saturdays Jan. 15 - 29. Cost $50.

Hand Vase. Youth 4-6 make clay artwork of their hands, 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 13, and 10-10:30 a.m. Jan. 20. Cost $18.

Modern Art Face Mobile. Youth 7-12 design a piece of modern art, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and 4-4:30 p.m. Jan. 19. Cost $18.

Sunset March. Youth 7-12 use ceramic paints to decorate tiles with an elephant herd, 4-6 p.m. Jan. 25, and 4-4:30 p.m. Feb. 1. Cost is $25

Jump Rope for Fun & Fitness. Youth 8-13 learn jump rope skills for individuals, partners and groups, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays Jan. 10 - March 21 at Meneley Elementary, and Tuesdays Jan. 11 - March 8 at Pinon Hills Elementary. Class for 14 and older, 5-6 p.m. Wednesdays Jan. 12 - March 9 at Meneley. Cost $50.

Historical Fencing. Students 13 and older learn basics of Renaissance swordsmanship, 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays at Jacks Valley Elementary, or Wednesdays at Gardnerville Elementary. Register for both classes and receive $10 discount.

Moroccan Cooking Class. Students 18 and older learn a new dish each week, 9-11:30 a.m. Saturdays. Cost $20 per class.

How to start a worm bin. Students 18 and older learn to start a composting worm bin, 10-11:30 a.m. Jan. 19. Cost $30.

Concealed weapon certification. Course meets and exceeds Nevada State concealed weapon certification requirements for handguns. Class is 6-9:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 at the recreation annex, and 8-11 a.m. Jan. 22 at the Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90 plus a $10 insurance fee. Spouses are half price.

Fly Fishing. Learn fundamentals of fly fishing, 6-7 p.m. Thursdays Jan. 27 - March 3. Cost $125.

Scrap booking. All day crop with instructor Jackie Gordon, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 8, at Gardnerville Elementary. Tools available. Cost of $10 includes snack and water.

Beginning tai chi. Warm-ups, exercises and repetitions, Saturdays at Gardnerville Elementary School. Cost $5 a month.

Ballroom dance. Learn fundamentals of fox trot, swing, waltz and Latin dances. Class is 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fridays Jan. 7-28. Cost, $80 per couple.

Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays, Jan. 3-31, at the recreation annex building. Bring an exercise mat. Cost $40.

Natural health approaches. Receive a complete personal health evaluation and learn natural ways to support and heal your body with foods, herbs, supplements and remedies. Class is 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 4-25. Cost $40.
