Basketball: Lady Tigers fall in final seconds, Douglas boys cruise past Wooster

Two words were written on the board for the Douglas High girls' basketball team following their 47-45 loss to Wooster Tuesday night in Minden.

Little Things.

"That's all it came down to tonight," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "We just didn't do enough of the little things well enough to win this game."

The loss was a tough blow to the Tigers (4-3, 0-3), who had put together a nice four-game win streak during a tournament last week, but were kept out of the win column in the Sierra League standings.

"We can't feel sorry for ourselves," Christen said. "We have a big hole to dig out of and we have to find a way to do it. We just have to get more consistent."

Douglas led 44-41 heading into the final minute but the Tigers couldn't manage to make a field goal down the stretch as Wooster used a 6-1 run to steal away with the win.

Wooster overcame the 44-41 lead with a basketball and a pair of free throws but Douglas' Jackie Harper hit the back end of a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 45 with 41 seconds left.

Wooster held possession almost through the entire remainder as they missed a pair of shots and tracked down the rebounds on both. It was a put-back with 6.3 seconds remaining that set the score at its final.

"I thought at times tonight we really rebounded OK, but that didn't happen on that last Wooster possession," Christen said. "We didn't do a good job in that last minute. We were up three but then we had some bad turnovers and we missed some big free throws. We just didn't get it done."

Douglas had time for a final shot, but it bounced off the front of the rim.

Wooster jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first two minutes of the game. Douglas fought back with an 8-3 run to close out the quarter trailing 12-8.

After falling back by nine in the second quarter, Douglas against staged a comeback, rattling off an 8-0 run to trail 19-18.

Wooster jumped back out by four heading into halftime though.

The second half played out similarly, with Douglas either tying the game or taking a lead six times only to have the Colts jump back out in front on each occasion.

"You fall back early on like that, you use up a lot of energy getting back into it," Christen said. "Then we got down by five and tied them. Then down five again and then tied them again. That adds up."

Carly McCullough, who led the Tigers with 13 points, gave the team its biggest lead of the game at 42-38 with 3:34 when she made a lay-up, drew a foul and converted the free shot.

Wooster scored nine of the games final 12 points, however.

"There wasn't really one possession where we lost the game, it really was just all those little things adding up," Christen said. "It started with falling back 9-0."

Wooster was led by guard Sheila Christie, who scored a game-high 25 points, including 15 in the second half and five in the final three minutes of the game.

"They really didn't do anything we weren't expecting them to do," Christen said. "Christie is a good player. She created shots and she did a great job for them tonight."

Douglas was plagued by struggles at the free throw line, missing its first eight shots from the charity stripe. The Tigers finished 7-of-16.

"It keeps coming back to consistency," Christen said. "We'll just take it, learn from it and improve on it."

Bri Burnside and Erica Macias each had six points for the Tigers and Jackie Harper added five in the loss.

Douglas rolled to a 64-27 win over Wooster Tuesday, getting points out of 12 of its 13 players while improving to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league play on the year.

Jorey Scott led Douglas with 12 points, Austin Neddenriep and Jake Tessmann each had eight, Theo Denson had seven and Kameron Van Winkle and Matt Thomas each had six.

The Tigers limited Wooster to just four fourth-quarter points and got 36 points from its bench in the win.

Douglas next hosts Spring Creek Friday night at 6 p.m.
