Man admits theft of jewelry, silverware from his family

A 26-year-old Carson City man pleaded guilty Tuesday to grand larceny, admitting he stole jewelry, silverware and other items from family members valued at $27,000.

Timothy M. Jenkins admitted to District Judge Dave Gamble he took the items from his father and stepmother's Gardnerville home.

"I stole some jewelry from my father, stepmother and stepsister and other valuables from the house," Jenkins said.

He told Gamble he was a "heavy heroin user" at the time of the July 28 incident and pawned the items.

Jenkins said he took his father to all the pawn shops and he was able to recover many of the items.

According to reports, his parents' items were valued at $16,368 and his sister's at $10,584.

Gamble set sentencing for Jan. 25.

Jenkins faces up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine and restitution. He also is eligible for probation.

He told Gamble he'd been off heroin for about a month. He is under the supervision of Carson City alternative sentencing for a misdemeanor reckless driving conviction.

Jenkins said he is tested regularly, attends weekly counseling and daily 12-step meetings.

"This is a life change," Gamble said. "With heroin there is no choice but to quit or die. I'll see you Jan. 25 clean and sober."
