Vivaldi's 'Gloria' performed in free concert Sunday

Staff Reports

The Chancel Choir of Carson Valley United Methodist Church present a holiday performance of Vivaldi's "Gloria," 6 p.m. Sunday, in the church sanctuary, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville.

The choir will be accompanied by an orchestra. Dr. Stephen H. Farnsley is the choir director, and Mark Dorio is accompanist.

Soloists include mezzo-soprano Becca Baumruck, alto Ann Delahay, and sopranos Heidi Staudenbaur and Kathy Chipman Wicker. Soloists and the 30-voice chorus will sing the original Latin text, and open with "Gloria in Excelis Deo," (Glory to God in the Highest), the words sung by the angelic chorus announcing the birth of Jesus to shepherds, conveying the message the savior had come.

Baroque master Antonio Vivaldi's music was influential to Handel and J. S. Bach. Known as il prete rosa, the red-haired priest, Vivaldi worked in an orphanage girl's school where he composed much of his music for the young singers and instrumentalists.

His "Gloria" is one of the most well-known Christmas classics.

The concert is free, but contributions to defray the costs of the program are appreciated. Information, 782-4600.
