Tim Haltom

A memorial is 7 p.m. today at Echo Creek Ranch, 2478 Meyers Road in Meyers, for Tim Haltom, 58, who died in Gardnerville Dec. 4, 2010, from complications of a severe bone infection.

Born Sept. 5, 1952, in Burbank, Calif., to Mary Lou and Dick Haltom, he attended grade school at Tahoe Valley Elementary, where he was known as the fastest kid in school.

He was also a real phenomenon as an all star pitcher in the Lake Valley Little League, once striking out nine straight batters in a District All Star game in 1965. His brothers include South Tahoe High School graduates Rick ('69), Chris ('72), Scott ('74) and Greg ('98).

He had an uncanny knack for catching fish, when no one else could during many backpacking trips into Desolation Valley.

He was a lightning fast skier and best friends with Craig Calonica and other ski racers during the 1970s.

Mr. Haltom was the superintendent in charge of building projects, including the gondola at Heavenly Valley, and a $100 million home at the East Shore known as the "Tranquility House." He lived in Alaska for eight years and built schools and post offices in remote villages throughout the Alaska outback. He battled crippling arthritis for over a decade.

He married Becky Burgett in 1981, daughter of Lake Tahoe singer Jim Burgett.

They had a son Ryan in 1982 and daughter Alicia in 1988.

He is survived by his mother and father; brothers Rick of Seattle, Chris of Santa Cruz, Calif., Scott of Benicia, Calif. and Greg of San Diego.
