1A Roundup: Coleville teams win opening games, Sierra Lutheran falls in weekend tournaments

The Coleville girls' basketball team opened the season with two wins to take first place in the Antelope Valley Lions Club Basketball Tournament over the weekend.

The Lady Wolves defeated Big Pine, Calif., 52-20 on Friday night with senior guard Martha Robles leading in three categories with 13 points, five assists, and eight steals. Junior forward Lela Gnuse-Stokes had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior forward Linzy Garcia added seven points and 10 rebounds with junior Elizabeth Pierce grabbing eight rebounds and scoring eight points in the victory.

Sophomore Daniela Sandoval came off the bench to score six points and grab six rebounds.

The Coleville girls defeated Lee Vining, Calif., in the championship game on Saturday by a final score of 41-15.

Lela Gnuse-Stokes, who was named tournament MVP, led the Wolves with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Linzy Garcia, also named to the all-tournament team, had a strong performance with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Also playing very well were Elizabeth Pierce with six points and five rebounds and McKenzie Stokes with two points, four assists, and a team-high six steals.

Coleville's junior varsity, a last minute replacement for a team that wasn't able to attend, lost to Lee Vining 21-20 on Friday and came from behind on Saturday to upset Big Pine by a final score of 40-37. Sophomore McKayla Stokes was named to the All-Tournament Team for her outstanding play.

The Lady Wolves next action will be in the Comstock Classic Tournament to be held in Virginia City on December 9-11.

The Coleville boys' squad won its first two games of the season with a 59-44 win over Big Pine and a 45-29 win over Lee Vining.

After opening the season with a win over Lee Vining last week, the Sierra Lutheran girls' basketball team endured a tough three-game stretch over the weekend with losses to a trio of larger schools.

On Thursday, the Falcons fell 71-13 to 3A power Truckee.

The Falcons bounced back Friday, losing by just seven points (30-23) to 2A North Tahoe. They lost 37-20 Saturday to 2A Incline.

The Sierra Lutheran boys' squad dropped its first two games of the season, losing a nail-biter against Quincy 48-47 on Thursday and falling 61-28 to Portola on Saturday.
