Jobless picture may brighten in 2011

Last week the state released figures that showed the percentage of Douglas County's unemployed dropped to the lowest number since December 2009.

The county's 14.1 percent unemployment rate puts it in a three-way tie with Clark and Mineral counties for third highest in the state. Lyon County continues to lead the state with 17.2 percent unemployment and Nye County with 16.1 percent.

Before anyone breaks out the party hats, though, it should be pointed out that there were 1,200 fewer people in the county's labor pool in October 2010 as there were in December 2009.

On Wednesday, members of the Economic Forum heard a report that Nevada may see some job relief in the next year.

Our governor-elect, Brian Sandoval, also expressed some positive feelings going to the upcoming Legislative session.

When he took office during the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt said "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself."

It's not a bad thing to have a positive attitude when talking about the economy. Fear may not be the only thing we have to worry about, but conquering it will be a good step toward a new dawn.
