Woman hurt in rollover

A Hawthorne woman was hospitalized after being partially ejected from the vehicle she was in 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Kathryn Layton, 22, was injured when the 1990 Toyota Camry she was riding in left Highway 395 near Spring Valley and landed on its roof.

Layton was taken to Renown Medical Center by Care Flight helicopter after the accident.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the Toyota was driven by David John Nichols, 30, of Hawthorne, who was also injured in the accident. Two children who share Nichols' last name were also in the vehicle. A 9-year-old girl was uninjured and an 8-year-old boy received abrasions from his seatbelt, according to Trooper Chuck Allen.

All three Nichols were taken to Carson Valley Medical Center.

According to the NHP report, Nichols was southbound on Highway 395 when for some reason he stepped on the brakes causing the Toyota to go into a skid. When he released the brakes, he lost control of the Toyota and it went off the edge of the highway, landing 30 feet away.

Highway 395 was closed for a short time while the helicopter landed.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. East Fork firefighters and medics from Carson Valley and south county responded to the accident.
