Staff Reports


Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department offers classes for children to seniors. Registration required for all classes. Information at the office, 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, or 782-9828.


Butterfly wind chime pottery

Children 7 to 12 create wind chimes, 3:30-5 p.m. May 3 and May 13 at the recreation annex building. Cost, $32.


Dragonfly finger print platter

Children 7 to 12 create ceramic food-safe platters with non-toxic paints, 3:30- 5:30 p.m. May 11, and 4-4:30 p.m. May 17 at Sapphire Wizard Fired Arts. Cost, $25.


Adventure camp activities include games, arts and crafts. Snack included. Camp is 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 19 at Gardnerville Elementary or Jacks Valley Elementary School. Cost is $22.


Introduction to horses

Students age 6 to 18 learn about horses, grooming, equipment and hands-on horsemanship. Class is 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Mountain View Equestrian Center. Cost is $80. Children under 9 must have parental supervision.


Starting a worm bin

Learn how to start a composting worm bin for growing vegetables and flowering plants in a chemical-free environment, 10-11:30 a.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. May 12, at the recreation annex building. Cost is $30.


Ballet. Students age 3 and older learn ballet and develop concentration, coordination, self-discipline and confidence. Classes at World Gym. Call recreation department for schedule and cost.


Dog obedience

Establish good conduct and curb bad habits in a dog obedience class by instructor Guy Yeaman, Wednesdays, May 26 through June 30, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building. Teach your dog to obey the commands heal, sit, stand, stay and recall. Dogs must be at least 4 months old, have a choke chain and fabric or leather lead. Cost is $80.


Beginning Tai Chi. Learn this soft martial arts form with warm-ups, exercises and repetitions. The ongoing class is held Saturdays in Lampe Park near the senior center. Cost is $5 per month.


Concealed weapon certification. Course meets and exceeds Nevada State concealed weapon certification requirements for handguns. Class is 6-9:30 p.m. May 19 and May 21 at the recreation annex and May 22 at the Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90 plus a $10 insurance fee.


Natural health approaches. Receive a complete personal health evaluation and learn natural ways to support and heal your body with foods, herbs, supplements and remedies. Class is 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, May 5-25, at the recreation annex building. Cost is $40.


Ballroom dance. Learn fundamentals of fox trot, swing, waltz and Latin dances. Class is Fridays, 7-8 p.m. May 14 to June 11, at Dance Workshop in Minden. Cost, $80 per couple.


National Scrapbook Day

A day of scrap booking projects with instructor Jackie Gordon, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 8 at Gardnerville Elementary School. Tools available. Door prizes. Cost of $30 includes a snack and water.


Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays, May 3-31, at the recreation annex building. Bring exercise mat. Cost, $40.
