Trails association plans event for hiking challenge

The Carson Valley Trails Association's fourth annual Hike for Health fundraiser for the Genoa Foothill Trail System project begins April 22 with an auction event at the Genoa Town Hall and concludes with a family barbecue at Lampe Park in Gardnerville on May 23.

The Trails Challenge offers the opportunity to engage in healthy, outdoor activities and learn about trails in the Carson Valley area. Participants can sign up to hike, walk, jog, run or ride. Weekly guided hikes, walks and trail adventures begin April 24 and continue through May 22. Registration is $25 for adults, free for age 17 and younger. Free smart hiking workshop, 6 p.m. Monday, at Sierra Crest Academy, 1701 Lucerne, Minden. Fitness expert Mike Hewitt discusses using Nordic trekking poles while hiking. Information, 267-5366.

The 2010 Hike for Health Trails Challenge auction event is 5-8 p.m. April 22 at the Genoa Town Hall, and includes silent and live auctions, music by Genoa's Foothill Road, refreshments and a no-host bar. The event is free, no reservations are needed. Information, 783-1764, 782-6882.

Carson Valley Trails Association offers guided hikes, walks and trail adventures April 24, May 1, May 8, and May 22, for those signed up for the Hike for Health Trails Challenge. The May 8 trails challenge includes a leave no trace orientation hike presented by Tahoe Rim Trail Association. Registration is $25 for adults; free for age 17 and younger.
