Clothing donations needed for Second Hand Rose fashion show

The winner of the Douglas County Historical Society's March photo contest winner is Kathy Mortimer. What a great shot of our mule deer. Thanks, Kathy, for submitting our winning photo. And thanks to all who submitted March photos; those were the best photos yet.

Our April photo contest is now in full swing. Get out there and take that perfect show of Douglas County in April and submit it to the contest at the e-mail address below or by dropping a print copy by the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville. Entries will be accepted until 4 p.m. April 30.

May 1 is Student/Senior Day at the Genoa Courthouse Museum. This is right in the middle of the Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival taking place from April 29 to May 2. The museum will be open free of charge to any student accompanied by an adult and all seniors.

We also have two wonderful exhibitions for you. Marilyn Elligott demonstrates spinning techniques while Kay Barcellos demonstrates weaving. Kay will have a large antique loom showing how our grandmothers did it. Come get a taste of Nevada's first settlement including how women made fabric for all their needs.

The Second Hand Rose fashion show and sale is May 8. Tickets are $15 and are on sale now at the Gardnerville museum or by calling 782-2555 to charge by credit card.

We are still taking clothing donations for our Second Hand Rose event. Bring in your casual clothes, slacks, jeans, anything you'd wear while relaxing. We're also looking for some larger sizes as not all of us fit into sizes six and eight. Bring your gently used clothes to the Gardnerville museum.

Coming up on May 22 is our annual Barn Tour featuring barns located along the Emigrant Trail and will be held between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Your ticket will be the barn book that gives information about each barn, how to locate it and when it will be open for viewing. The barns include some of the most interesting in the valley, so don't miss this year's tour.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
