Save the charter school

EDITOR:

My grandson came to live with us roughly two years ago due to his father's illness. We enrolled him in grammar school for the remainder of the school year and then in middle school the next fall. During the first semester his grades were all "F"s (failing in all classes). We then took him out of public school and sent him to Sierra Crest Academy. Since that time his grades have improved because of the smaller class sizes and the more personal attention he receives.

He has made good progress in most of his classes, and is improving the others. He has been given a home study alternative to bring these grades up. He actually enjoys going to the school and is working on the home study portion so that he will move on to the next grade in the fall.

The small classes and personal interface with the teachers and students has changed his attitude toward school and given him the encouragement he needs to succeed.

It would be a shame to close this facility as some students obviously need the closer interface with the teachers and students. And the only other answer is to enroll him in an independent study program or home school him as the public school system is not equipped to handle kids that have gotten behind or need additional attention. His dad and grandparents will not allow him to fall behind again.
