The arrival in Virginia City this noon of a Buick car driven by Harrison Judd attracted considerable attention on C street as Mr. Judd came to the Comstock from Reno in 2 hours and 50 minutes on low gear. The car is a 35 hp Buick Model C 37, the radiator hood and gears being sealed by Fred White, Postmaster at Reno, before the start was made. The car carried five passengers. This is the first time a water cooled car has ever made a trip of over 22 miles over the mountains.

The board of supervisors of Alpine county recently ordered the clerk to advertise for bids for reconstructing the road from Fredericksburg to Woodfords. The road will follow closely the present route but with fills and grading. The steep pitch near the Heimsoth ranch will be eliminated and the blind curve removed. Geo. Delury, clerk of Mono county, solicited support and as a result a bill was passed by the California legislature transferring the sum of $20,000 per annum to Alpine, Mono and several other smaller counties from the gasoline tax in larger counties.

For the first time in history Alpine County is to have a bank. Announcement was made that the Bank of America, one of the nation's largest financial institution, will open a branch in Markleeville about Nov. 16. The bank will be located in two rooms in the Alpine Motor Lodge. A considerable amount of remodeling has been necessary to fit the two front rooms of the motor lodge for the banking operation. A large modern safe is to be moved into the bank rooms provided the work of the enlarging doors to permit access is completed.

Carson City based Nevis Industries Inc. has defaulted on a $10 million loan it received to buy 48,000 acres of land once belonging to livestock baron H.F. Dangberg, and the trustee of the property has been authorized to sell the deed to the highest bidder next month in Minden. The corporation bought the sprawling lands located in Nevada and California from Grace Dangberg and other stockholders related to H. F. Dangberg for $7 million in March of 1978. In October of 1980, the corporation obtained another loan for $3 million.

The population of Wellington, Nevada, is anywhere from 400 to 800 people, depending on who is being counted. Lately, a few residents agree that number should increase by at least one. It started a few weeks ago with three separate sightings of a woman in white walking down by the Walker River near town, and though an evening stroll by the river may seem like a ho-hum occurrence in a small town, this woman is different. She's kind of see-through. Frank McBride and his wife Judy, who own the nearby Hoye Mansion, have had their own bouts with "unexplained goings-on" at the historic bed and breakfast inn.
