Upon closer inspection

EDITOR:

I'm sure most readers of the Oct. 16 edition of The R-C saw the picture of the Douglas County Republican Women's co-chair presenting books to the DHS library and thought, "What a nice gesture." I, too, would have concurred had I not, upon further inspection, identified three of the four books displayed.

One, "Character Makes a Difference" by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2012, was reviewed by the Web site "On the Issues" which reviews books by all politicians and candidates of any party.

They state: "Huckabee is entirely open about mixing church and state. (He) openly calls for supporting political 'candidates who share your (his) Christian standards.' And he does not mean Jews, Muslims or Mormons who happen to share standards that coincide with Christian standards."

Another book, "Deliver Us from Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism and Liberalism" by Fox News commentator Sean Hannity was reviewed by Business Week who said: "Hannity's biases and rhetorical style are revealed from the outset and the book is full of name-calling trumped up as intellectual debate and one-sided history lessons designed to deceive the uninformed."

But the third, and most offensive, is "Godless: The Church of Liberalism" by Ann Coulter. According to Wikipedia the central thesis of this book is that "liberalism rejects the idea of God and reviles people of faith, yet bears the attributes of a religion itself." Coulter states in the book that liberals believe "nature is God and men are monkeys."

I have to state that I have not read any of the above as the writers do not share my political or religious values. I write this only to inform the parents of DHS students that these books are now available for their children to read and, in my opinion, do not reflect what the GOP (Grand Old Party) stands for.
