Fundraiser today at Pizza Barn

A fundraiser is planned to raise awareness about congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 3-9 p.m. today, at Pizza Barn, 1544 Highway 395, Gardnerville. Walker resident Shannon Minder's infant nephew Michael Joseph Skaggs died as the result of the condition that affects unborn babies. Proceeds of the fundraiser benefit the nonprofit Breath of Hope organization that creates awareness and provides support for families affected by CHD. Winter clothes collection

Girl Scout Troop 633 and Minden Rotary are collecting winter clothing and new hats and gloves for Project Santa Claus. Make donations of used clothes for all ages at collection boxes at Douglas County elementary schools by Dec. 3. Also needed are new unwrapped children/teen books, hats and gloves to be collected by Dec. 15.

Rehearsals open for 'Messiah' singers

Carson Valley United Methodist Church presents a community concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 13. The Carson Valley UMC Chancel Choir and area singers present excerpts from Handel's "Messiah," including the "Hallelujah Chorus." The choruses will be accompanied by the Carson Valley Sinfonia, conducted by John O'Neill. Choral ensemble directed by Dr. Stephen H. Farnsley. Mr. Mark Dorio is church accompanist.

Those wishing to participate are encouraged to attend as many rehearsals as possible. Rehearsals are 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Dress rehearsal is 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 12 in the sanctuary of Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Information, 782-4600.

DAWG gift tree helps shelter animals

A holiday gift tree to benefit Douglas Animal Welfare Group will be displayed through Dec. 22 at Max's Pet Supplies in the Raley's Center in Gardnerville, open at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Kori Snyder, owner of Max's, and DAWG are partnering to supply items for homeless animals. The tree displays ornaments with requests for dog and cat food, toys and other items. Donated gifts will be delivered to the Douglas County Animal Shelter before Christmas.

Tax-deductible monetary gifts accepted in the DAWG donation box at the store. Funds are used to pay for spay and neuter, medical emergencies, health problems, training, and special diets for shelter animals.

DAWG is a nonprofit group of volunteers who rely on donations and membership dues. Members are at the shelter every day of the year, even on holidays, to exercise, socialize, and provide much needed attention.
