Baseball: Gorman tops Douglas 8-0

Bishop Gorman finished off an 8-0 win over the Douglas baseball team in the second round of the NIAA 4A State Tournament at College of Southern Nevada Friday afternoon, knocking the Tigers into the loser's bracket.

Douglas will play at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Green Valley-Cimarron game for a chance to play for the state title Saturday.

Gorman, ranked 10th in the country by USA Today, collected eight hits and capitalized on a number of defensive miscues early to push ahead for the win.

The Gaels got a strong effort on the mound from righty Stephen Manthei (10-1) who carried a no-hitter through three innings and scattered three hits for the entirety.

Douglas' Beau Battista hit a double late in the game and Troy Torres and Beau Davis each had a single.

Tyler May started the game on the mound for the Tigers, but left after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in third. Reliever Tim Rudnick finished the game on the mound.
