CASA hosts state conference

Court-Appointed Special Advocates of Douglas County hosts the second annual Nevada CASA Association Conference on Friday and Saturday at the Carson Valley Inn.

"The conference is an opportunity for CASAs from across Nevada to come together for two days of training and camaraderie," said Linda Cuddy, Douglas County CASA coordinator.

"The theme is 'Communication, Collaboration and Commitment' and is to foster an atmosphere of working together for the good of our children, of doing more with less and making the most of available resources in these difficult times."

Speakers include Supreme Court Justice Nancy Saitta, Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, D-Washoe County, Douglas District Judge Michael Gibbons and Kat Simmons.

The keynote address is by Judge Deanne Darling of Clackamus County, Ore. She is a long-time advocate of juvenile and family law practices that provide a strong support system while ensuring appropriate services as needed.

Attendees will gather on the steps of the Legislative Building in Carson City at 4 p.m. Thursday for a Light of Hope Candlelight Vigil.

"April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and this is a great start to the many activities planned around the state," Cuddy said.

Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, and Saitta will speak at the event.
