Basketball: Hug's Voyles resigns

The school community at Hug High School is excited to welcome one of our "local stars" to a new leadership role on campus! Charles (Jr) Walker will take over the helm of the HAWK men's basketball program beginning July 1.

Charles is a 1994 Hug High School graduate. Following a stand-out high school athletic career, Charles attended both Allan Hancock College and Feather River College studying early childhood education.

Charles has worked for the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows since 1996 serving the youth of the Hug community in various positions. Since 2007, Charles has been the director of "The Club at Hug Teen Center." The Club at Hug is an innovative collaboration between WCSD, Hug High School, and The Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows placing an active teen center on the Hug campus to meet the unique needs of the students in the neighborhood. The Club at Hug is the only facility of its kind in the state of Nevada.

Coach Walker has an abundance of coaching experience to ensure that the HAWKS continue their tradition of excellence! Charles has been the Head JV or Varsity Assistant for the HAWKS for the past 10 years. During that time, Hug has finished at or near the top of league standings every year, secured two Northern Regional Titles and made two state tournament appearances.

Hug principal, Andy Kelly, stated, "Charles is the absolute right choice to continue the good things within our men's basketball program and take us to the next level. He has close and supportive relationships with our students and believes in each young man's potential to succeed. I look forward to Charles focus on academic excellence, team cohesion, and more victories for the HAWKS! Charles will fill the gym with an exciting brand of basketball that I believe will continue and improve the outstanding legacy that outgoing coach, Brian Voyles, established.

The Hug community thanks former head coach Brian Voyles for 10 years of excellence and service to the men's basketball program. Brian has stepped back from the head role in eager anticipation of spending more time with his wonderful wife, two amazing daughters who will both attend Hug High School (9th and 11th grades) and his budding basketball star son! The Hug community thanks Brian for his commitment and sacrifice to the young people at Hug over the past decade.
