Baseball: Nevada's Simas signs with Tampa Bay

Reno, Nev. - University of Nevada senior catcher Travis Simas has signed to play baseball for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Elk Grove, Calif. native earned first team All-Western Athletic Conference honors this past season and will be assigned to play in Port Charlotte, Fla. for the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Gulf Coast League.


The strong armed Simas led the WAC with 15 pickoffs and caught 45 percent of the runners attempting a stolen base. This past season he hit .256 with 24 runs scored, nine doubles, six home runs and 27 runs batted. The six home runs ranked second the team.


He was named Mar. 30-Apr. 5, WAC Hitter of the Week after batting .600 (6-for-15) with eight runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and seven runs batted in which included hitting .692 (9-for-13) in the first conference weekend of the season at Louisiana Tech as the Wolf Pack went 3-1 versus the Bulldogs. Twice during the season he delivered extra inning game winning hits with an RBI single at UC Davis as the Pack won 2-1 in 11 innings and a two-run walk off homer in the bottom of the 12th inning of a 14-12 victory over #23 Hawai`i.
