Golf: Wicker, Wurster qualify for Junior World

A pair of Douglas High golfers will be competing on an international level later this summer.

Senior Thomas Wicker and junior Bethany Wurster each punched their tickets to the Callaway Junior World Championships with strong performances at a qualfiying event at Rosewood Lakes in Reno last Thursday.

Wicker shot an even par 72 to tie for first on the boys' side and Wurster shot a 72 to win the girls' side by 10 strokes over Incline standout Katelyn Wright.

The top two finishers at the event received exemptions to the Callaway event, which is considered to be the world's most prestigious junior golf tournament. It is held annual in San Diego in mid-July.

Wicker and Galena High School senior Andrew Mims earned the spots by tying at even par, three shots ahead of the rest of the field.

Wicker hit 14 greens in regulation and made two birdies in the final four holes to charge to the top of the leader board.

This will be his first trip to the worldwide tournament, although he has been aiming to qualify for the past five years.

Wurster had a number of birdies on her way to the dominating win. She qualfied for the Junior Worlds last year and went 91-77-78 through the first three days.
