Fun summer events up at museums

This weekend may be one of the best for taking your winning photo of June in Douglas County. Carson Valley Days offer lots of options for your camera. Photos are due at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville by June 30.

Chautauqua in the Park is Wednesday. Mike Maloney will emcee the event and the youth of Douglas County will show you what various historical figures were like. The event begins at 5 p.m. in Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa. Bring a picnic supper and enjoy the fun.

This year's official Pony Express Re-ride is June 18. As of right now the ride past the Genoa Courthouse Museum is 8:30 a.m. Call ahead to 782-4325 to see if they are on time. Mike Murphy will be the rider taking the mochila from Genoa up to Old Kingsbury Grade. Mike and Bob Moore will both ride segments up at the Lake.

Next year is the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express. Major events and presentations are scheduled for all along the re-ride route. While you may be looking forward to next year, don't miss this year. This is history in action for the whole family. Also, this year the Genoa Courthouse Museum will be open to the public for free until the re-riders have passed by.

The next in the series of Thirsty Thursday Wine Walks is 4:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday. Main Street Gardnerville hosts this event to introduce you to the downtown Main Street district. The Gardnerville museum is a part of the historic district and will be open during the wine walk. Come on in and see what we have to offer along our portion of Main Street.

Saturday, June 20, is the first of the Douglas County Historical Society summer swap meets. Booth space reserved ahead is $10. The meet is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Even if you don't have anything to sell, come on out at look around. We are always looking for buyers as well as sellers.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
