Honor guard poker run set for June 20

On the heels of a highly successful 5K fun-run, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office honor guard is sponsoring a poker run and show and shine June 20.

The fundraiser, from 9 a.m. to noon, begins at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 1625 Water St. (Buckeye Road and Highway 395) and ends at Heritage Park with a show-and-shine until 2 p.m.

The first hand is $20 and includes a T-shirt. Extra hands are $10.

Cars and motorcycles are welcome. Sheriff Ron Pierini will be a judge at the show and shine.

Prizes and people's choice trophies will be awarded, including a novelty award for "the run whatcha brung" set, said Deputy Kevin Schaller, an honor guard member.

"The poker run will be a nice tour of Douglas County, including Lake Tahoe," Schaller said. "It's open to cars and motorcycles, we'd love them all."

Stops in the 90-minute run so far include the Lakeside Inn at Lake Tahoe and Trimmer's Outpost in Genoa. Maps will be distributed at registration.

The sheriff's honor guard is still accepting sponsors, prizes and awards.

Participants may register the day of the event.

The honor guard attends memorials and funerals of fallen officers in the region and is raising money to attend the 2010 national memorial in Washington, D.C. in May.

Honor guard members pay all their own expenses.
