Community has key to success in business

On Friday it was announced that the Carson Valley Inn will go through the same transition as many of the Valley's family-owned businesses.

After 25 years, the Inn is in the process of being sold to the people who own Bodines, the Silverado and the El Dorado. The transaction, whose details have yet to be revealed, should be completed by the end of the year.

There aren't many large family-owned firms left in Carson Valley. Edgewood, formerly named Park Cattle, and Bently Agrowdynamics, are a few examples.

The list of firms owned from outside the county is increasing. All of the stateline casinos once had local owners. Bently sold his original business to General Electric. Sharkey's became part of the Holder Group. This newspaper is owned by a family corporation based out of Reno. It's in the nature of organizations like these that the more successful they are, the more attractive they are to interests outside the community.

The owners of the Carson Valley Inn, Jeane and Patrick Mulreany, have done a great deal for our community, besides employing nearly 500 people and paying their taxes.

They have been part of our community, and that has been key to their success here.

Here's hoping their successors embrace that same philosophy.
