Hot August poker run in Minden on Thursday

More than 850 cars in the Hot August Nights Poker Run are expected to make an official lunch stop in Minden Park on Thursday.

The classic cars making their way to Carson Valley are some of the 5,500 entrants in this year's 23rd annual Hot August Nights.

The event runs approximately 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in Minden.

Streets will be closed to through traffic from Esmeralda Avenue and Fourth Street around the park area.

The cars will participate in a 110-mile seven-stop poker run which begins at Baldini's in Reno, continues through Carson City to Minden Park and then over Kingsbury Grade to South Lake Tahoe, finishing at Legends at Sparks Marina.

The poker run involves a hand of seven card stud, where participants receive randomly drawn poker cards at each stop. The best hand wins $3,000, $1,750 for second place and $1,000 for third place.

Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Authority and the Town of Minden are co-sponsors of the event.

The Valley Cruisers Car Club assist with parking and poker card distribution, the Lions Club will be barbecuing hamburgers, Lira's Market will feature barbecued tri-tip, Barone & Reed Food Co. and Francisco's Mexican Restaurant will add lunch specials to their full menu.

Bill McClain's Mobile Music will provide music throughout the day.
