Uplifting humanity not government's job

EDITOR:

Regarding the letter from Bill Thomas, I assume from the first paragraph with his reference to the 2008 election, he is talking about the United States of America, but I do not concur with his praise of the "liberal leaning people and administrations" for their "accomplishments."

"Uplifting humanity" is best left to the family, churches, and charitable or spiritual organizations - not liberal governmental powers. The United States Constitution and our Declaration of Independence provide for the preservation and protection of individual rights - not "making things better for the common welfare of all peoples of the world."

These documents do not mandate developing a strong middle class, or implementing national unemployment insurance, Social Security, and Medicare. And, there is no mention of championing minimum wage laws, defeat of sexism, or public education. There is simply the mandate to guarantee personal and individual rights and freedoms.

Don't keep comparing "liberals" and "conservatives," but get back to the basics: Our Founding Fathers sought to limit government, minimize taxes, and guarantee personal freedoms, anything else was political bureaucracy (liberal and/or conservative) at the expense of personal freedoms.
