The R-C Morning Report

The first two big fires of the summer are expected to be pretty much out by the end of the day today. Both set by lightning, the Pine Nuts and Boulder fires tested Sierra Front Cooperators' ability to fight two wildland fires at the same time. The Pine Nuts fire was relatively accessible compared to the Boulder fire, which was the one that endangered homes. Both were stopped in good order.

Rick Gunn hosted what turned out to be a newspaper reunion at a retirement party for Associated Press Capitol Bureau Chief Brendan Riley. In addition to the host and the guest of honor, attending were former Appeal photographer K.M. Cannon came up from Las Vegas, former Tahoe Daily Tribune reporter Brian Maffly came from Salt Lake City, former Appeal and TDT sports reporter Jeremy Evans, Appeal Capitol Bureau reporter Geoff Dornan, former TDT photographers Dan Thrift and Jim Grant, former R-C photographer Belinda Grant, former TDT writer Amanda Royal, TDT editor Elaine Goodman and a host of Rick's neighbors and friends.

Thundershowers are back in the forecast starting Tuesday, but for today, sunny with a high of 99 degrees. Unstable air is predicted to bring the thunderstorms through the rest of the week, which could also bring some cooling. It says the high could be down to 89 degrees by Sunday, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
