Auto Racing: Thorson tearing up Chico circuit

Carson Valley resident Tanner Thorson, who has been a fixture on regional Outlaw Kart racing circuits over the past six years, is enjoying a strong campaign at the Cycleland Speedway in Chico, California this summer.

Last weekend, he won both the Intermediate 250cc class and the Open Intermediate 500cc class.

He is just seven points out of first place in the season standings at the halfway mark of the 250cc class.

It is his rookie season in the 500cc class and he is currently holding on to the Rookie of the Year position.

The season continues into mid-September.

Thorson, who is heading into his eighth-grade year of middle school, qualified for the Golden State Nationals last year, where he took third in the 250 and 500 main events, and won six main events on the 2008 Cycleland Speedway schedule.

He has been racing since he was 4 years old and has won numerous awards.

His sponsors include Wheeler Screen Printing/Committ Clothing, Scholastic Racing, Meyers Brothers Racing, Browns Valley RV, Micro Blue Bearings, Sciarroni Brothers Racing, Mastercraft Painting & Decorating, Coyote Grill, Grandma Hattie's and Ing Excavation.

Scholastic Racing, created by dentist Dr. David M. White, is Thorson's major sponsor in the 500cc Intermediate Outlaw Kart.

Every month, Thorson provides White with a progress report from his school and in turn, White supports Thorson's racing efforts.

Thorson has a Web site, www.tannerthorson.com, which he posts many of his race results on.
