Gardening volunteers needed for Dangberg Home Ranch project

Lasagna smother gardening

Join gardeners at 9 a.m. July 17 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park to begin work on Gertrude's Garden. The goal is to recreate the beauty of Gertrude Dangberg's garden as it was in the 1930s and '40s.

The project begins with coping with the weeds in the garden with an organic technique of lasagna gardening or sheet composting. The lasagna is created with layers of organic material that decomposes over time and kill the weeds in the process. Yard and kitchen waste create excellent compost.

Volunteers should bring work gloves, hat, sunscreen and drinking water. If available, bring large pieces of corrugated cardboard and newspaper to add as compost materials.

Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park is at 1450 Highway 88, Minden. Information, Park Interpreter Mark Jensen, dangbergranch@parks.nv.gov or 783-9417.
