Jethro's barbecue benefits Boys & Girls Club

Tonight is the night for the king crab and steak cookout hosted by Jethro's Oven-Grille and Sports Bar in the Gardnerville Ranchos. The summer evening barbecue gets underway at 5 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m.

In addition to the fabulous food, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Capt. Keith Colburn of the fishing vessel, Wizard, featured on Discovery Channel's popular show, "Deadliest Catch." The captain will be on hand to share in the feast and sign autographs.

Raffle items may be bid on during the event and a door prize will be awarded at the end of the evening. A DJ will be on hand to spin music for the crowd.

Sponsors of the event include American Fish Co., Bravo Cafe and Bakery, Carson Valley Accounting, Douglas Disposal, Full Belly Deli, Lira's Market, Ranchos Pizza Factory, Scolari's Gardnerville, Sierra Canopy and U.S. Food Services.

Tickets are $25 per person for the steak or crab. Kids tickets are $5 and include a hot dog and family fun. Seating is limited, and organizers expect that the event will sell out, though there may be a few tickets at the door. You can call Carson Valley Accounting at 782-7874 or the Business Council of Douglas County at 782-6715 to check availability.

Proceeds from the evening benefit the Carson Valley branch of the Boys & Girls Club, currently located in the Ranchos at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.

Out of the mouths of preschoolers

Last week I took my sons to visit a friend in California who happens to have two large, but very friendly boxers. My 4-year old Sam is a little uncertain around dogs but he seemed to be OK with these particular two.

We spent a few moments settling in and getting acquainted. Shortly thereafter he rushed in, all bright-eyed and breathless and exclaimed, "Mama. I said 'excuse me,' to that dog and he did! That dog speaks kid."
