Young Chautauqua program starts for year

Happy New Year! We hope you will start by supporting your local museums and attending the wonderful events and programs.

Take a photo of January in Douglas County and submit it to the Douglas County Historical Society's January photo contest. Drop a print copy by the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center or e-mail it to the address below. Winner announced Feb. 5.

Get the kids ready and get them into Young Chautauqua. There will be an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 12. This program is for any students from fourth through 12th grades. It offers them the opportunity to research an historical character and to portray for the public. Contact Grace Bower at 782-2555 for more information.

Coming up is our annual melodrama,"Hotel Minden II, or Divorce Mill." Performances are Jan. 29-31, with dinner shows on Friday and Saturday and luncheon matinee on Sunday. Tickets go on sale at the Gardnerville museum Monday. Call 782-2555 to order by credit card.

Last year's show stopper was our villain singing from his jail cell. This year former villain Daniel Gaughan along with his son Daniel II will be our intermission olio. Whatever you do, do not miss this. This makes up for all the snow and cold all winter.

Tickets are also on sale for our drawing for the Alice Cardelli Swett painting of "Wild Bunch," a band of mustangs in our Nevada desert. The painting was donated to DCHS by the family of Marge Bay and has been appraised at $1,500. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Come in and see this magnificent painting and purchase your tickets soon.

Now is the time to start thinking about who you think should be nominated for Women of the Year. Nominating packets for the 10th annual Women's History Remembering Project may be picked up at the Gardnerville museum starting Jan. 4. Your choice needs to be someone who has lived in Douglas County and contributed to our quality of life. Information, 782-2555.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
