Sheriff's Code Red alert in effect

Last year the Mono County Sheriff initiated a Reverse 911 or Code Red alert message to all phone numbers listed in the county. This is designed to inform the public to a significant event or the prediction of an event that may impact public safety. The message is not designed to scare you but to inform you of the likelihood or potential for an unusual condition that is occurring or about to occur. If you have any questions, you can call (760) 932-7549 and speak to a watch commander or Sgt. Booher.

Fishing season open

On Jan. 1, the Topaz Lake fishing season again opened. While the prizes are different from before, it is still really worthwhile to enter your catch in their derby. I heard about a man who fished on opening day and ended up being $500 richer through their new system. Give it a try.

Thrift store bag sale

The next $6 bag sale at the Walker Thrift Store will run from Jan. 20-24. You can get a bag full of clothing or anything else in the store (except jewelry) for $6. This is a deal that can't be beat, especially since the store has put out new merchandise and is ready to help you with your shopping.

Birthday celebrated

On Jan. 1, my mother turned 91 years old. It was great to talk to her and to realize the events and changes that she has lived through during those years. To her and all of our older citizens I say, keep on going!

Planning advisory committee

The Antelope Valley Regional Planning Advisory Committee will hold their monthly meeting 7 p.m. Thursday at the Walker Community Center. To hear what is being suggested or planned for our area, please attend their meetings.
