Antelope first-graders put on show

ANTELOPE VALLEY, Calif.

The first-grade class from Antelope Elementary School came to the Walker Senior Center on Feb. 9. After a luncheon, they put on a play for the seniors, as well as performing a musical show. The kids were great, and special thanks should go to their class teacher, Anne Waite, and the school's music teacher, Denny Scott, for their very special visit. We'll look forward to the next time.

School sports

The Coleville High School's boys' and girls' basketball teams have advanced to the Northern state regionals in Reno, which start Thursday. The girls will be the third seed, and the boys will be the second seed in this tourney. Keep a good thought, and root them home winners for the state tournament coming up.

Lions Club contest

This district of the Lions Club held their annual contest on Feb. 9. This year's winner was Andrew Oliveira from the Eastern Sierra Academy. Andrew outscored contestants from Coleville High School and Lee Vining High School with his speech about this year's topic, "Water " Will California Be Left High and Dry?" As a side comment, I'll just say that we can hope this recent rain and snow will help to answer that question.

The zone contest, pitting Andrew against the winner from Mammoth Lakes, will be held 1 p.m. March 7 at the Walker Community Center. Having heard this competition last year, I can tell you that it is well worth attending.

Relay for Life Poker Night

Our local team in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the Antelope Valley Survivors, will hold their second Poker Night on March 21, at the Walker Community Center, beginning 7 p.m. This is a such a fun evening and for such a good cause. Please put it on your calendars now as a "don't miss" event.
