Poker night a smash hit

The Antelope Valley Survivors of the Relay for Life outdid themselves last Saturday evening. Their first poker night fundraiser was a marvelous evening of fun, and it was all for such a good cause, with the best part being that they reached their goal for the evening.

The $20 buy-in to play was certainly an easy contribution to make, especially with the good company of all participating. I want to thank the team and their helpers for the evening we enjoyed, as well as to encourage them to have more of these types of fundraising during the year.

Everyone I spoke with who attended is hoping that these will become more frequent happenings. I wish there were space in the column to list all the names of the hard workers, but most of us know who they are.

A special thank-you also goes to the Antelope Valley Lions Club for their donation of the no-host cocktail bar. As always, they're there to help good causes. To all involved " it was great.

The team's last fundraiser before the July 26 relay will be this Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., with their car wash at the Coleville High School. They really do a good job on your car, and then you don't have to be bothered with that chore. Be sure to come out and support them.

How big is big?

The annual fishing derby is rolling right along. The largest fish entered as of last weekend was a 5.8-pounder, caught by Chris and Josh Smithen from Gardnerville. Their fish is a full pound larger than the current second-place entry. The river is beautiful, and the fish are biting, so go give it a try. Just remember when you catch the big one that you need to have it weighed and measured at the Walker General Store to be entered in the derby.

Thrift store bag sale

Tuesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 26, the Walker Thrift Store will have their monthly bag sale for clothing. They have received and stocked a lot of really high-quality clothing, which you can buy for $3 a bag. Their hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Stop by and check it out and find some great buys. That would also be a good time to bring your aluminum and plastic for recycling.

Library news

In spite of the construction taking place at the Coleville schools, the library is open for business Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Currently, with the work taking place, you should park in the elementary school parking lot and go across to the library entrance.

The Antelope Valley Friends of the Library is starting a book club with a get-together 5 p.m. Friday at the library. Refreshments will be served and those interested can join the book club. At that time, they will be selecting a book for all to read and later discuss.
