Flower baskets available as Valentines

Staff Reports

GARDNERVILLE, Nev.

The Main Street Gardnerville program is offering public flower baskets for Valentine's Day as an alternative to traditional bouquets or chocolates.

The flowers become part of the beautification of downtown Gardnerville and support horticultural programs at area schools. Flowering baskets were hung from lamp posts in downtown Gardnerville last year. The baskets were created by horticultural students at Douglas High School.

Donation cost is $60 per basket. Gardnerville officials plan to hang the fully flowering baskets in early June to be enjoyed throughout the growing season. Valentines can admire the flowers all summer and won't need to water them.

Participants receive a card with a photo of one of the flower baskets. Donations can also be made for birthdays and anniversaries.

Sponsors acknowledged on the town Web site. To sponsor a basket, call the Gardnerville Town Office, 782-7134.

The Main Street Gardnerville program is affiliated with the National Main Street Program for historical preservation. Information at mainstreetgardnerville.org
