Bogus property tax review targets residents

Douglas County Assessor Doug Sonnemann is advising residents to be aware of a letter from "Property Tax Review Board," offering a reduction in property taxes for $198.

Sonnemann said the letter is a scam and doesn't work with Nevada law.

"I don't want any of our residents paying the fee and not having results," Sonnemann said.

"This firm has targeted recent purchasers of property in an effort to solicit money for their purported property tax savings benefit," he said.

According to the Nevada Attorney General's office, taxes are calculated on replacement cost new, less depreciation. The Legislature put a property tax cap into effect in 2005 using the 2004-05 base year for property taxes.

Savings the "Property Tax Review Board" promises are based on faulty data and a Nevada property owner will probably see no savings, the attorney general's office said.

Sonnemann said the owners of "Property Tax Review Board" are facing legal issues in other states.

He said Douglas County property owners with any questions should contact his office at 782-9830. There is never any charge for assistance.
