Special prosecutor contract considered in Krolicki case

CARSON CITY - The state Board of Examiners today will consider a $415,000 contract for a special prosecutor to handle the criminal charges against Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and his aide, Kathryn Besser.

The attorney general's office sought bids from private attorneys to take on the case after a judge in Las Vegas ruled it could not prosecute Krolicki and Besser because of a conflict of interest.

Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is appealing the ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court, and arguments are scheduled Aug. 31.

Krolicki and Besser are accused of mishandling millions in college savings program while Krolicki was state treasure.

No money is missing and Krolicki is not accused of embezzlement. Both he and Besser have maintained they're innocent.
