Sports briefs for Aug. 4

The Bighorns fall baseball program will have tryouts for the 18-under and 14-under teams Saturday morning at Western Nevada College.

  The 14-under team will start at 8:30 a.m. and the 18-under team starts at 10 a.m.

  Players from Carson City and Douglas County are welcome to tryout. Any player who was eligible for Babe Ruth this past season will be eligible to play for one of the teams.

  The season runs from September to October with games and practices at Lampe Park in Gardnerville and Western Nevada College.

  Anyone interested in trying out should bring cleats and a glove. For more information, call Ron Cauley at 781-0107.

The Douglas High volleyball program will host the second-annual Mud Fest on Aug. 8 at Herbig Park next to the skate park and across from Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

The mud volleyball tournament will be catered with a barbecue and Keva Juice and showers will be provided.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. for the event and cost is $200 for adult teams (minimum six players) and $20 per player for student teams (minimum six players).

Prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams and to the team with the best uniforms.

Space is limited to 24 teams.

Carson Valley AYSO will host a number of referee training classes this summer.

U8 referee training, which covers the fundamental skills needed to officiate games for players under the age of 8, will be Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., August 11 and 13 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. both nights, Aug. 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Aug. 16 class is specifically for youth referees ages 10 and up.

All U8 classes are at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department.

Regional referee training, which covers the skills needed to officiate U-10 and U-12 games, will be offered Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department and Aug. 15 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Douglas County & Recreation Department.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will host a hunter safety course on Aug. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., marking the last such class until March 2010.

The class is limited to 30 students and is a certified course, meaning that anyone who passes will receive a certificate valid anywhere in the United States or in Canada to purchase hunting licenses.

A work book obtained at the Sheriff's Office or purchased online must be completed prior to the class.

The cost of the course is $5 unless the participant is under 18.

Course work covers wilderness survival, gun safety, wildlife habitat and conservation, archery and hunting regulations.

A series of open gyms for seventh- and eighth-grade girls planning to try out for the Carson Valley Middle School and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School basketball teams this season are scheduled for Aug. 19, 20 and 21 at Carson Valley Middle School's main gym.

The sessions will run from 10 a.m. to noon and are free.

Participants are encouraged to wear T-shirts, shorts and athletic shoes and to bring water with them.

Attendance isn't required to try out for the teams, but it is recommended as the sessions will cover the basic skills needed to try out for the teams.

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is currently taking registration for the Fall Adult Volleyball Leagues.

The registration deadline is Aug. 21. Registration is on a first-come basis and cost is $200 per team.

The leagues being offered include the Monday night women's league (6-on-6), Tuesday night open "A" league (4-on-4), Wednesday night coed "C" league (6-on-6) and Thursday night coed "B" league (6-on-6).

The leagues are scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 31

League schedules will be available at the managers meeting on Aug. 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Recreation Annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane across from Lampe Park.

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will take sign-ups for NFL Youth Flag Football through Aug. 28.

NFL Flag Football teaches boys and girls the fundamentals of football, good sportsmanship, and teamwork all in a fun, non-competitive, non-contact way. Players receive a reversible NFL Flag jersey, mouthpiece, and individual trophy. All games will be played on Saturdays at Stodick Park. Participants will be divided into four age groups, 5-6 coed, 7-8 coed, 9-11 coed, and 12-14 coed. Players must be at least 6 and not 15 by Sept. 1.

Coaches will randomly choose teams through a draft system. Volunteer coaches and sponsors are needed. Background checks will be required for all volunteer coaches. Games will begin on Sept. 19.
