Firefighters working on Centerville Flat fire

Two firefighting hand crews are cutting a line around the Centerville Flats fire above Highway 4 in Alpine County.

Supported by a helicopter, the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch is reporting the personnel onscene are adequate to fight the eight-acre forest fire.

First reported 11:16 a.m. Friday in heavy timber above Markleeville, firefighters had to be helicoptered in or walk to reach the remote location.

One firefighter had to be helicoptered out after suffering from heat exhaustion.

The fire was set by a lightning strike.

It was the largest of several fires set by a strong thunderstorm cells that passed north and east of Carson Valley. Most were single tree, sagebrush or power pole fires that were handled by local firefighters.

Between 11:16 a.m. and 8:17 p.m. Friday the Sierra Front dispatch center received more than a dozen reports.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Western Nevada and Eastern California for today. Isolated thunderstorms producing heavy rain of up to an inch, hail and strong gusty winds are predicted through the day.
