Mumbo Gumbo comes to Minden

The Carson Valley Arts Council presents Mumbo Gumbo on May 8 at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden.

Doors open with a no-host bar reception at 6 p.m. Concert at 7 p.m. Desserts at intermission. Admission is a $15 donation at the door. Proceeds benefit the Carson Valley Arts Council.

Mumbo Gumbo has blended musical genres " rock, soul, Afro-pop, balladry, zydeco, country " into a celebratory, danceable noise for more than 20 years.

Fronted by singer/songwriters Chris Webster and Tracy Walton, the band is anchored by drummer Rick Lotter and bassist Lynn Michael Palmer. Reggy Marks' sax, Jon Wood's guitar and Steve Stizzo's keyboards flesh out the band's expansive sound.

Mumbo Gumbo's music was used in the TV show "Northern Exposure" and the band and appeared in the movie "Her Minor Thing." They regularly appear in Reno at the Blues on the River Festival and Brew-Ha-Ha and at the Rib Cook Off in Sparks.

For the last concert of the season, Carson Valley Arts Council and Wild Horse Productions present Patrick Ball and the Medieval Beasts performing The Flame of Love, May 16 at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

The Flame of Love is a spoken word and musical retelling of the medieval legend of Tristan and Iseult. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a no-host bar by the Carson Valley Community Theater. Concert begins at 7 p.m.

Admission is $15 for members, $17 for nonmembers.
