May is bike to work month

May is bike to work month.  There are many organizations out there that organize bike to work weeks.  This includes the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Caolition, the Alta Alpina Cycling Club and my work: GE Energy.  It is strategically placed in May so that people who may try to bike to work for a week might continue over the summer.  There are many things that communities do to help stimulate (not government stimulus package) riders.  Things like bike fix it days, coffee shop stops, bus rides etc.  Last year, GE Energy even provided a healthy lunch one day for those who rode their bikes on the specified day.

Personally, I like to ride my bike to work since I live about 3 miles from work.  I just can't justify driving my multiple ton car a few miles to get to work, or go to the local store etc.  Plus for me, it is a good way to clear my mind on my way to work and focus on the tasks for the day and also to disconnect from work and look forward to coming home to my family.

Below is an excerpt from the LTBC web site.

May is Bike Month in Lake Tahoe!

Bike to Work Month promotes a healthy, environmentally-friendly commute to work, gets basin residents out of their cars, and reduces traffic. Encouraging bicycling is good for your business! Employees and patrons arrive in a good mood, parking needs are reduced, and our community is a friendly place with many people out on bikes.

May 11-15, 2009: Bike to Work, School, and Play Challenge

Last year over 450 Lake Tahoe residents rode their bikes to work during Bike to Work Week, logging more than 15,000 miles! This year, Bike to Work is expanding to Bike to Work, School, and Play.  Commuters, students, and visitors are all encouraged to participate in the Challenge.  Our goal for 2009 is 750 riders! Help us meet our goal. Click the links below for more details on the 2009 Challenge, and make sure to check back in mid-April for info on refreshment stops, sponsors, and how to sign up for the Challenge.
