Volunteers needed for Wilson Canyon project

Volunteers are needed for a joint project to work on the protected side of Wilson Canyon on April 18. The Coalition for Public Access and the Bridgeport District of the U.S. Forest Service have joined together to plan this beneficial activity.

Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the parking lot on the west end of Wilson Canyon.

The work will consist of raking out illegal trails, barricade restoration, and clean-up. Volunteers should bring water, work gloves, rakes, and shovels. Hats, sunscreen, and clothing appropriate to whatever weather might be encountered are also suggested.

Lunch will be served to participants by Smith Valley Rotary Club. Reservations are required by Tuesday to 465-2328 or 721-0912.

This project is a result of a compromise agreement made by Lyon County with the forest service and Bureau of Land Management which made land on the north side of the Walker River open to off-road vehicles and the land on the south side of the river open only to nonmotorized use.

Some trails have been made on the closed side and barricades destroyed.

These will be the primary focus at the workday.
