Meetings this week for potential museum volunteers

GARDNERVILLE, Nev.

Thanks to all of you who came by the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center for Student-Senior Day. The program was excellent and the Washoe stories of Coyote and Lizard and other animals were delightful. Thanks to the Washoe people for sharing their history and storytelling with us.

By now you have received your notice of the volunteer meetings to be held next week at the Court House Museum in Genoa and the following week at the Gardnerville museum. The Genoa meetings are 1 p.m., April 13, 14 and 15. The Gardnerville meetings are 10 a.m. April 23 and 24.

It is important that all volunteers attend one of these meetings, whichever fits into your schedule, to learn how things work together to make our museums operate so smoothly. For more information, call Grace at 782-2555.

As you may have guessed, the April Photo contest is in full swing. Though it is early in the month, now is the time to start taking photos of what you think really says "April" in Douglas County. Is it a late spring snow or sprinklers on frost covered lawns? Whatever you chose, get your photo into the Gardnerville museum or e-mailed to in2my2cats@yahoo.com by 4 p.m. April 30.

The annual reception honoring all our volunteers is coming up. If you are a member of the Douglas County Historical Society and a volunteer at either of our two museums, plan to attend. This is our chance to say thank you for your hard work. If you have not received your invitation, please call 782-2555. Ask for Cindy or Grace.

The exhibit committee is working overtime to get the Genoa Court House Museum ready for its May 2 opening. We will also be honoring Snowshoe Thompson on this first Student-Senior Day to be held in Genoa. Plan to come enjoy the festivities as well as visit the completely refurbished Snowshoe Thompson room.

In celebration of the season opening of the Genoa Court House Museum, the museum bookstore will feature a grand opening sale on May 2 and 3. DCHS Members will receive a 20 percent discount on their purchases and nonmembers will receive 10 percent off. Stop in and shop with us.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
