Alpine, Douglas searchers seek Reno woman

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue team are assisting in a search for a missing person near the town of Markleeville, Alpine County, California.

The missing adult female, 51-year-old Leslie Lee Gray, a resident of Sun Valley, Reno, has not been seen for approximately one week.

Gray was believed missing when her unoccupied vehicle was discovered parked in a vehicle turnout near the Hangman's Bridge area of Markleeville, California. The vehicle was first seen parked in the turnout on March 29. The vehicle turnout is a popular spot for hikers to leave their vehicles parked while hiking in the backcountry area around Markleeville. Alpine County Sheriff's deputies became suspicious that something was amiss when they discovered the vehicle still parked in the turnout the following Sunday.

Alpine County deputies checked the vehicle and found the vehicle contained miscellaneous clothing, paperwork, and an ice chest with food and drinks. This discovery led them to believe that Gray was missing, and not out on a routine hiking trip. Follow-up investigation with Gray's family and neighbor's revealed that she had not been seen or heard from for over one week. It is unknown why Gray's vehicle was parked in the turnout in Markleeville.

Since Sunday about 20 members of the Alpine County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue team, augmented by 17 members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue team, have searched the surrounding hiking trails, forested area, and Carson River in an attempt to locate Gray.

This exhaustive search included use of four search dogs; two (2) from Douglas County Sheriff's Office SAR, one from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office SAR, and one from Calaveras County Emergency Services.

Gray is described as: female, Caucasian, 51 year-old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing approx 145 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Gray's possible whereabouts is asked to call the Douglas County Emergency Services Dispatch Center at (775)782-9911.
