Kindergarten registration just around the corner

GARDNERVILLE, Nev.

Spring is in full swing. Trees are budding, daffodils are displaying their glorious golden faces and warmer days are upon us. It has been great to be outside, get a head start on the yard and enjoy the sunshine.

Another sure sign of spring is the upcoming kindergarten registration for the 2009-10 school year, which is April 20-May 1 at all Douglas County elementary schools.

Registration materials are available at neighborhood schools or at www.dcsd.k12.nv.us/. Online, click on "Parents" in the purple bar across the top of the page, then on "Registration- How to enroll your child in school" on the left. Materials are available in both English and Spanish.

Parents must bring the registration packet and an original of the child's birth certificate, up-to-date immunization records signed by a doctor or nurse, and a utility bill with your street address as proof of residency in your neighborhood.

Nevada school laws require a child be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2009, to attend kindergarten during the 2009-10 school year. The Douglas County School District encourages parents to register children as soon as possible to prevent large kindergarten classes in the fall.

The elementary schools in the Gardnerville Ranchos are C.C. Meneley Elementary at 1446 Muir Drive, 265-3154, and Scarselli Elementary, 699 Long Valley Road, 265-2222. Information for other elementary schools are found on the district's Web site, www.dcsd.k12.nv.us.

Carson Valley Golf Course

The folks at Carson Valley Golf Course have come up with an ingenious way to show support of local businesses. From now until April 15, golfers who pay a regular 9- or 18-hole green fee receive a $2 bill. All they ask is that you "pay it forward" by spending the $2 at a business in Carson Valley.

Their one-day introduction to golf clinic for juniors ages 5-16 is April 18. The clinic covers everything from putting and chipping to basic swing and etiquette. Clubs and refreshments are provided. Registration is through the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department at 782-9828.

The course hosts the Nike Mobile Pro-Shop for Kids, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 18, featuring a selection of Nike Golf junior clubs, shirts, shoes, hats and accessories at CVGC just for this one day.

Registered participants in the six-week junior program starting April 20 receive 25 Nike Bucks to spend at the special event. Information, www.carsonvalleygolf.com or 265-3181.
