Volleyball: Tiger spikers suffer first loss at marathon tournament

Playing seven matches in one day proved to be just a little too much for the Douglas High volleyball team Saturday at the Sheldon Invitational in Elk Grove, Calif.

Douglas won six consecutive matches (all by the score of 2-0) to extend its unbeaten streak to 20-1 before falling 27-25, 25-13 to Del Oro in the tournament championship.

The Tigers, currently ranked No. 1 in the Sierra Nevada Sports Media Poll, came into the 24-team tournament as the No. 3 seed and opened with sweeps of Merced, Florin and Rio Americano in pool play.

Douglas beat Wilmerding 25-12, 25-14 in single-elimination bracket play and advanced to the semifinals with a 25-13, 25-13 win over Dixon.

The Tigers beat top-seeded Colfax 25-19, 25-20.

Match play began at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the championship wasn't over until after 8:30 p.m.

Douglas returns to league play Tuesday at Damonte Ranch and hosts Wooster Thursday.
