Girls' Soccer: Douglas gets past Galena

The Douglas girls' soccer team picked up its seventh-consecutive win to open the season, beating Galena 2-1 in Minden Tuesday night during the Sierra League opener for both schools.

The teams kept each other at bay through most of the first half before Dany Heidt set freshman Katie Dry up to the right side of the Galena net in the 34th minute. Dry chipped a shallow-arcing shot over the Grizzlies' keeper that looped just inside the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.

About 10 minutes prior, Dry set up a nice scoring opportunity when she weaved through three defenders on the wing and played the ball in front for Alex Laing, who had an open path to the net. Laing lofted a nice shot that sailed just high and wide.

Douglas finished out its scoring on the night in the 45th minute.

Following a Galena foul, Heidt sent the ball in for an unassisted goal and the 2-0 lead.

Galena amped ups its attack in the second half and was met with the tough Tiger defense.

Sierra Bertolone-Smith, Cora Moody, Mackenzie Cauley, Sage Lyons, Shelby Eisele and Kelsie Conklin shared the basic rotation while Dry and Kelly D'Amico each had a couple of big defensive plays.

Starting keeper Christy Harvey (five saves) shut the Grizzlies out through the first half and Brianna Randall (four saves) played the second half in net.

About two minutes after Douglas' second goal, Randall made a nice save on a charging Galena forward, but got knocked down on the play. She recovered in time to grab the rebound off the foot of a second Galena forward in front of the net.

Lyons had one of the best defensive plays of the game when she chased down a Galena forward with the ball inside the goal box. The stole the ball and forced it out of bounds, just to the right of the goal post.

Galena got on the board in the 67th minute on a nice shot from 25 yards out that slipped in just under the crossbar.

Rather than simply play to preserve the win, Douglas went on the attack for the final 10 minutes, dominating possession and keeping the ball on the Galena end for the remainder of the game.

Galena mounted one final charge and had a 1-on-1 breakway, but Dry chased the ball down from about 10 yards back and forced it out of bounds.
