T'ai Chi for beginners starts Sept. 16

Staff Reports

A six-week beginning T'ai Chi course starts 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at O2 Wellness, 1557 Zerolene Place in Minden.

"This is a great opportunity to start in a group of other beginners, but the doors are always open for people to come in," said T'ai Chi instructor Ginny Cardenas.

Cardenas said T'ai Chi is a good way to fight feelings of anxiety and helplessness.

"It's empowering and puts you back in control," she said. "Sometimes it's just doing something as simple as remembering to breathe deeply and slowly, or to focus your attention at the center of your body. These practices are central in doing T'ai Chi. They are the beginning and the end of all movement."

The practice of T'ai Chi helps produce a sense of well-being. Health benefits have included decreased blood pressure, lowering of blood sugar, prevention of bone loss, improved immune function, increased range of motion, improved posture, balance and coordination and enhanced quality and duration of sleep.

Classes meet 6-7 p.m. beginning Sept. 16. Class fee is $50. To register, call Cardenas at 720-3659.
