Baseball: Tigers pick up two wins in Vegas

After taking its lumps against a talented Coronado squad, the Douglas High School baseball team rebounded to pick up two wins during its weekend trip to Las Vegas.

"We played a really quality team on Friday in Coronado," Douglas coach John Glover said of Douglas' 10-1 loss. "We just didn't play very well and they were just very good. They had a couple of really good players, including the MVP from last year's Kelly All-Star game

"We ran into a pretty solid pitcher too, so it was just a tough afternoon."

Douglas bounced back Saturday with a 6-4 win over Las Vegas in 10 innings.

The Tigers got a strong start from sophomore Michael Whalin, who pitched a scoreless game into the seventh before Douglas surrendered an unearned run.

"Michael has been doing a good job," Glover said. "He has two starts now and he is throwing strikes. The defense has been playing well behind him too."

Senior Jordan Hadlock closed out the game, pitching three innings in relief to pick up the win.

Douglas fell back 9-1 in the first two innings against Foothill Saturday afternoon, but came back to win the game 19-11.

"The kids were swinging it well and the wind was blowing out," Glover said. "It was a good comeback win for us. Everyone was hitting and the whole lineup was producing."

Freshman Kameron VanWinkle came on in relief after two innings and pitched the rest of the game.

He also hit his first career home run, as did Jeff Crozier. Hadlock also knocked one out in the game.
